Teaching Assistants and SEN Staff

The Staff Room work with mainstream primary and specialist schools providing Teaching Assistants (TA’s) for general classroom support, 1:1 support and more specialist SEN supporting roles.

Classroom Teaching Assistants

Class TA’s help the class teachers carry out the lessons plans they have created and contribute to learning objectives in the classroom. The role can vary a lot in regards from school to school, class to class and from day to day.

TA’s may be asked to work with small groups or individuals with more targeted assistance to allow them to progress quickly, sometimes a teaching assistant may be asked to take the whole class (although in theory this should only be HLTA’s). Other duties may include hall and lunch time supervision and assisting with the preparation of the classroom.

Special Educational Needs (SEN) Teaching Assistants

SEN TA’s work within mainstream and special needs schools either supporting the class teacher or working on a one to one basis with a particular child. To work as a SEN TA you would need to have general TA experience or have experience working within an SEN childcare environment.  It would also be benefical if you are Team Teach trained.

Frequently asked questions

To work as a classroom TA we require a minimum of 6 months experience (in the last 5 years) supporting children in a childcare environment.  You must also hold GCSE grade C or above (or equivalent) in English and Maths. You do not need to have any formal qualifications to work as a TA but there are a number of nationally recognised qualifications for teaching assistants that are available. Contact you local college for details.

Anyone that wants to work in schools must complete an extremely thorough and rigorous background checking process. On average it takes around 2-3 weeks to be cleared to work, but this does depend on the DBS check, references and any other checks that will need to be completed.
